I truly believe that it is the responsibility of the Body of Christ to maintain the sacredness of Christmas if we are going to esteem 25th December as being a memorial for the birth of our Saviour and King. We, as Believers have allowed ourselves to be overwhelmed with the commercialization of Christmas, while for us this day should be sacred. The birth of Jesus represents God's efforts to redeem the souls of men from the bondage of sin. This day should be a day of reflection, meditating on the goodness of our heavenly Father, whereby Jesus was born, God's plan for salvation. Emmanuel! God left eternity, peace, love, holiness to take on our sinful bodies, to experience pain, death, and everything that is packaged with sin. Indeed, 25th December should be sacred, a time of reflection on the loving kindness of our gracious Father.
So, how did we get all caught up with the Christmas tree, over spending by purchasing gifts, decorations and over eating of various dishes? What does this have to do with God taking on our sins, Jesus knowing the gruesome death that awaited Him? We say that it is about the birth of Christ, yet we decorate a tree and put gifts under it for our friends, children and loved ones. I think that the proper conduct would be for us to present our gifts, those spiritual gifts to our Saviour, The Christ. This would be a true memorial because we would be remembering what the wise men did; they worshiped and offered their gifts. Matthew 2:11 - "And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshiped him; and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh." The gifts were presented to Jesus, not to Mary and Joseph. We have missed the true meaning of Christmas. If it is to be a holy-day (holiday) for us as Believers, then forget about the tree and follow the example of the wise men and the shepherds. Luke 2:20 - "And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them."
We must choose - is it going to be the Christmas tree with beautiful decorations and a variety of gifts for family, friends, and children or are we going to follow the Holy Scriptures and present our spiritual gifts to our Saviour and Lord. What we should not continue to do is mingle paganism with a sacred day. Either let it be fully pagan and do whatever commercial and worldly thing we so desire on 25th December or let us truly reflect on what transpired when Jesus was born. The tree or Jesus Christ - you choose. Paganism or Sacredness - what does 25th December mean to you?
